The Arrowverse's Lex Luthor, Jon Cryer, Names His Favorite Live-Action Lexes

Supergirl's Jon Cryer ranks his portrayal of Lex Luthor in the CW series against former portrayals by Gene Hackman and Michael Rosenbaum

Before Jon Cryer's Lex Luthor returns in Supergirl's Season 6 premiere, the star revealed which prior television/movie portrayals of Lex inspired and fueled him.

"As far as I'm concerned, there are dueling #LexLuthor GOATS. And these are them," Cryer wrote on Twitter. Cryer's tweet included photos of Rosenbaum's Lex from Smallville and Gene Hackman from 1978's Superman: The Movie. Rosenbaum replied to Cryer's post with gratitude, tweeting back, "Holy shit. too kind of you my man. what a freaking stud. thanks."

Cryer first debuted as the Arrowverse's Lex Luthor in Supergirl's Season 4 episode "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," with the remaining season revealing his extensive role in manipulating characters like Agent Liberty (Sam Witwer) and Supergirl's Harun-El clone Red Daughter for personal gain. Despite being shot by his sister Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) in Supergirl's Season 4 finale, Lex was eventually revived by the Monitor to help save the Multiverse from his Anti-Monitor counterpart.

However, Luthor used his rebirth of sorts to make attempts on the lives of various multiverse incarnations of Superman, including Rosenbaum's Smallville counterpart played by Tom Welling, and rewriting the Book of Destiny to turn himself into a Paragon. When the multiverse was re-written, it also changed the world's memories of Lex from a criminal mastermind to a generous philanthropist and head of the D.E.O.

Previews for Supergirl's Season 6 premiere have teased a confrontation between Supergirl and her allies against Lex Luthor in the Fortress of Solitude. Sneak peek photos from the upcoming season show Lex utilizing Obsidian's technology to make half the planet his loyal followers. Lex will also be fighting against Lena who, in the Season 5 finale, realized the scope of her brother's manipulations and finally to Kara for forgiveness. The upcoming season of the Kara Danvers-centered series will be its last on The CW.

Supergirl's Season 6 premiere will see Supergirl take over the time-slot previously given to its spin-off Superman and Lois, whose production was recently put on hold due to COVID-19 issues and will return to The CW on May 18.

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Nicole Maines as Dreamer and Jesse Rath as Brainiac-5. Season 6 premieres March 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
