Supergirl is expected to return in mid-2021 during The CW's new midseason, which has been adjusted to accommodate the COVID-19 pandemic
When the Arrowverse shows return to The CW in Jan. 2021, Supergirl won't be among them.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Supergirl will be held for a midseason debut, while The Flash, Superman & Lois, Batwoman and Black Lightning kick off at the top of 2021. However, she won't be alone; DC's Legends of Tomorrow will also bow in midseason, as it has in previous years. Due to the adjusted schedule, The CW's midseason is expected to launch sometime between April and June 2021.
The delay is also meant to accommodate Melissa Benoist's pregnancy, as the additional time includes her maternity leave. In March, Benoist announced that she and her husband Chris Wood, who played Mon-El on the series, are expecting.
Like most CW series, Supergirl was impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In early March, the Arrowverse show suspended production in an effort to protect the cast and crew from the disease's spread. As a result, Season 5 was cut down to 19 episodes instead of 22. The Season 5 finale has since been rewritten, while the unaired episodes will be wrapped into the start of Season 6. Now, it looks like fans may have to wait almost a year for new episodes of the series.
Airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers. The Season 5 finale will air May 17.
