The Waterfront Cancelled at Netflix — Find Out What Kevin Williamson Had Planned for Season 2
Netflix is getting out of business with the Buckleys, cancelling The Waterfront after one season, Deadline reports.
Created by Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s Creek, The Vampire Diaries), the drama series followed the exploits of a prominent North Carolina family, whose desperation to keep their fishing empire afloat leads them into increasingly dangerous waters. All eight episodes dropped on June 19.
Holt McCallany (Mindhunter) starred as family patriarch Harlan Buckley, along with Melissa Benoist (Supergirl) as daughter Bree, Jake Weary (Animal Kingdom) as son Cane and Maria Bello (NCIS) as wife Belle. The cast also included Rafael L. Silva (9-1-1: Lone Star) as Harlan’s estranged son Shawn, Humberly González (Ginny & Georgia) as Cane’s ex-girlfriend Jenna, Danielle Campbell (The Originals) as Cane’s wife Peyton and Brady Hepner (Chicago Fire) as Bree’s son Diller.
Following The Waterfront‘s explosive finale, Williamson shared a few of his ideas for Season 2 .For starters, Harlan and Cane’s new understanding — which came about when Cane stepped up and killed Grady (Topher Grace) — may have brought them closer together, but Williamson still doesn’t believe that they’ve “gotten to the core answer of who they are to each other as father and son.” Moving forward, there will be “more stumbling for them to do as father and son before they fully repair that relationship.”
And then there’s Belle, who ended the season by reuniting with a bloody, beaten Wes (Dave Annable), as she was reintroduced as his new boss. “Belle has always taken her place, puppeting Harlan and controlling what happens to the Buckley family behind the scenes,” Williamson says. “All of her little shenanigans have been done behind Harlan, and in the shadows of Harlan, and now she’s ready to shove him out of the way, stand front and center, and really take the reins.”
